Sam selected for IPC European Championships – F35 Shot Put

Tuesday 22nd July 2014

This morning, British Athletics announced the full Great Britain and N.I. team that will represent at the IPC European Championships taking place during 18th-23rd August at Swansea University Sports Village. Sam was selected to compete in the F35 Shot Put, the finals of which will be on the evening of Thursday 21st.

Sam has been quick to make the transition from the track to field after being advised by Joe McDonnell (Lead Sprints Coach – Charnwood AC) and Katie Jones (Lead Manager for Talent and Futures – British Athletics) to have step into the throwing circle earlier this year. He finds himself ranked 5th in Europe and 6th Worldwide and is “buzzing” about the prospect of getting a taste of his new competition, “To have only started this event three months ago and to be given a chance to test myself against a strong international field is out of this world. There is only 30cm between myself and the top three right now, so who knows what can happen in a month’s time? Let’s aim high! I’m so grateful to British Athletics and their investment in my progression in Paralympic athletics, considering the sheer amount of talent trying to get a place on this Great Britain team.”

It is not without sadness that Sam finishes his tenure in the sprint events but realises that this opportunity is vital to his progression in the field.

“My speed over the 100m is something that no other competitor has in the F35 category, so I’m going into these Championships with a big advantage, which I owe to my previous coach Joe and his guidance through London 2012 and Lyon 2013. As the season has gone on, I’ve seen that the shot put is where my talent could pay medal-sized dividends, with Jim Edwards (Lead Throws – British Athletics/Charnwood AC) as my new coach, we are in position to make the most of these Championships and build towards a genuine medal hunt at the 2015 World Championships next season.”

The finals of the F35 shot put will be shown on Channel 4 and online on 4oD, on Thursday 21st August, 19:10 in the evening session. Tickets are available at
