Sam throws personal best performance in season opener

The Charnwood AC athlete improved on his previous lifetime best of 11.89m, throwing a new mark of 11.98m during the Loughborough Students BUCS Trials in the penultimate round of the men’s shot put.

Weather conditions were extremely erratic throughout the competition, with the first three rounds washed out with torrential rain mixed with sunshine spells. The circle soon dried however for the final rounds, which allowed the 30 plus athletes entered to find some rhythm towards the end of the competition.

“I’m pleased with the throw, the weather forced us all to take things slowly to begin with, which meant by the time we got to the fourth round, technically I was able to focus on making the right movements in the circle”, said Sam.

“It’s also frustrating to be 2cm short of the 12 metre line, which I’ve been surpassing in training. I can’t be too harsh on myself though, we’ve only just begun the season and Jim (lead throws coach at Charnwood AC) hasn’t allowed us to reduce my training volume yet. We are still building on what has already been a strong winter of heavy graft in the gym and on the track.”

With his first full season in the field events about to begin, Sam is relishing the chance to throw further distances at future competitions, including the Bedford International Games towards the end of May.

“It’s only a matter of time before I convert what we’ve seen in training, so I’m being patient and focusing on each session as it comes. There is still an abundance of time between now and when the World Championship qualification window closes, we aren’t rushing things.”
